Overview

David Peoples is a composer, presenter, and educator. He enjoys sharing his own music and the music of other composers through recitals and presentations. In 2021, he presented recitals featuring the music of more than 75 composers from all 50 states through the National Association of Composers, Music Teachers National Association, Research on Contemporary Composition Conference, and Electrophonic Concerts. He also composes actively, with recent performances by soloists and ensembles including Luna Nova Music Ensemble, Argento Chamber Ensemble, Contemporary Chamber Players, West Point Band, and others, with premieres throughout North and Central America, Europe, and Asia. His jazz compositions have also been premiered by Jazz Surge, featuring artists such as Randy Brecker, David Sanchez, Rufus Reid, and Gary Foster.

David has toured extensively and has lived, studied, and performed in Los Angeles, Austin, Memphis, and Atlanta. He has received numerous national and international awards for composition and produces albums as both a composer and recording technologist. His recordings frequently combine live performance with fixed-media and electronic elements. His music has been released through Navona Records, Ravello Records, MMA, Space Bear Records, Bluesilhouettes Music, SkyDeck Music, and Select-O-Hits.

David is also professionally active in the music industry as a producer, recording engineer, composer, film composer, and editor. He has worked with numerous professional and private clients, including the University of Memphis and the Germantown Performing Arts Center, and has engineered live performance recordings featuring artists such as Maroon 5, Bryan Adams, Los Lonely Boys, and Poncho Sanchez. He engineered, edited, and mastered a live performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 that received second place from The American Prize. His work in film composition and editing has also received recognition through award-winning experimental film projects.

As a faculty member at the University of North Georgia, David advocates for student composers by creating opportunities for them to present their music through academic conferences, ensemble performances, and recitals. Composition and creative practice are integral to his courses. David received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition from the University of Memphis, where he studied composition with Kamran Ince. He also earned a Post-Masters Certificate in Music Entrepreneurship from the University of Miami and is currently completing a Masters degree in Media Scoring and Production. His published music is available through Bluesilhouettes Music and UNC Jazz Press and is distributed by J. W. Pepper.

David often writes with a ginger ale in hand on a balcony surrounded by forest. For him, composition begins in this quiet space before making its way into performance and, ultimately, out into the world.
